6: Night

Posted by 비회원 강릉 : 2007/06/24 15:11

Because the weather was nice for the most part during this year's Dano Festival, many people stayed long into the night to enjoy the concerts and other performances. With some background music and slow-motion effect, even Gangneung looks like a wonderful little city.

This is the last of the Dano videos. In retrospect, it's amazing that a city the size of Gangneung can have any festival for seven straight days. Dano is undoubtedly the biggest and most important event in the life of this city. These videos only begin to show the variety and dynamism of the Dano Festival. The next time around, perhaps with the help of some students, maybe we can capture the enduring historical spirit that has made Dano a thousand-year old tradition.

5: Concert

Like other modern-day folk festivals, Dano is a mix of old and new. There's 종묘제례악 on one stage, which I regret not seeing, and B-boys on another. In the previous video interview, Prof. Hwang mentions how the festival is trying to attract the younger, modern generation. The "non-traditional" concert above was one of many on the night of June 22.

Professor 황루시 of the Korean Department is an expert on all things Dano. She has spent years researching and collecting historical materials and documenting Korean folk traditions. Prof. Hwang was nice enough to agree to an interview on a hot and muggy afternoon of June 20. In the 10-minute interview, she talks about the history of Dano and the special meaning it has, especially for the residents of Gangneung City. (The background noise is coming from the geut tent behind her.)

Special thanks goes to Prof. 김옥엽 for arranging the interview.

The week-long Dano Festival is not just for watching performances. There are many activities visitors can participate in and experience firsthand, such as riding the giant swing or getting your hair washed with special water. Dano would be meaningless without these folk traditions. And, of course, wherever you go, there's the ceaseless ear-popping kkangari. (Music from 관노가면극.)

There are so many performances during the Dano Festival, it's hard to see them all. And there's quite a variety - from the Cambodian shadow-play to the raucous song and dance of the yut sellers (who probably are not UNESCO-approved, seeing as they get a dirty parking lot at the festival fringes for a stage).

1: Carnival

In addition to the traditional performances, the market is a big part of Dano Festival (단오제). There are a lot of eateries and shops that line the local river. There are even amusement rides and a small circus tent. It's loud, crowded and carnivalesque. (The cabaret music in the background and the encore are performed by Gwangwon Police College.)
