Communication

Posted by 집행부 이야기 : 2010/06/19 18:09
When I came to Korea in 1995 there was no email available to the general public.  I communicated with my friends and family in Canada with handwritten letters.  The next year, a few Internet cafes started to appear in Seoul and I began to communicate with friends through email.  People stopped writing letters.

A few years later, the first instant messaging programs started to appear.  The first one I used was MSN Messenger.  When people started using messenger programs they stopped writing email.

These days I communicate with friends and family mostly through programs like Skype, Google Chat, and NateOn.  They are convenient but it is difficult to say much through them.  When I wanted to tell a friend about a trip in the past, I might have written a whole page on the places and people I met during my travels.  These days, because of the limited space in chat programs, I might simply answer, "I had a good trip.  The food was good."

It is foolish and unrealistic of me to expect people to return to handwritten letters sent through the post, but I do miss reading letters and email sent by friends.  Chat programs are nice but I would rather read about my friends' feelings and not just their 'status'.

-----------

That said, I would like to tell you that NateOn does not work so well on my iMac computer.  Therefore, if you would like to chat or send a message, please sign up for a Skype account.  There is a Korean version of the program.  My ID is Marcus Peddle.

And a handwritten letter or email would be lovely. ^^

I don't know how genuine this is, but it's amusing. An employee emails her boss, hinting at a pay raise by writing every instance of the letter S as a dollar sign. Her employer cleverly declines in reply by highlighting the letters NO in every word.

Dear Bo$$,

In thi$ life, we all need $ome thing mo$t de$perately. I think you $hould be under$tanding of the need$ of u$ worker$ who have given $o much $upport, including $weat and $ervice to your company.

I am $ure you will gue$$ what I mean and re$pond $oon.

Your$ $incerely,
Marian $hih

Dear Marian,

I kNOw you have been working very hard. NOwadays, NOthing much has changed. You must have NOticed that our company is NOt doing NOticeably well as yet.

NOw the newspaper are saying the world's leading ecoNOmists are NOt sure if the United States may go into aNOther recession. After the NOvember presidential elections, things may turn bad.

I have NOthing more to add NOw. You kNOw what I mean.

Yours truly,
Manager

Neither email speaks explicitly - they merely hint at or imply - but the letters literally spell out the intended meaning: "I am $ure you will gue$$ what I mean." "I have NOthing more to add NOw." The last sentence has double meaning: I have nothing more to write and I have nothing more to add to your salary.

You often see the dollar sign in the word Micro$oft - it's a way of graffiti-ing the company name and snubbing the richest man on earth. If you Google the word micro$oft, you'll see nearly 2 million search results. Understandably, when you use Live.com (Microsoft's search engine), you only see some 160,000 results along with the helpful "Were you looking for microsoft?"
