The term is over and no doubt you are all happy to have a rest.  Although we are all glad to have some time to relax, it is difficult to get out and do anything because of the bitter cold.  So, while you sit in front of the computer and dream of warmer days, here are a few photos to bring a smile to your face.  Thanks to all the students who didn't mind me taking their photos.

Humanities College Talent Show.  Lots of talent here!

The final event of the term.

Have a great vacation and I hope to see you all safe and sound next term.

Traditional Meal

Baked Beans and Toast

Baked Beans with Toast. Yum!

Today I made baked beans for the first time in a long time.  Baked beans are similar to Korean 콩조림 but the ingredients and cooking method are a bit different.  Korean beans are made with soy sauce and sugar and boiled until there is almost no liquid left.  Western baked beans are a complete meal so it includes onion, ham or bacon, spices, garlic, dark sugar and/or molasses, and tomato paste.  It's cooked slowly in an oven or a slow cooker for several hours.  It's usually eaten with bread (homemade is best!) or fish cakes.
I ate this several times a month when I was young.  When my mother made bread she would leave some of the dough to fry in the frying pan.  This kind of fried bread is called a touton (this word seems to be used only in Newfoundland).  Toutons and baked beans!  I must learn how to make bread.

Communication

Posted by 집행부 이야기 : 2010/06/19 18:09
When I came to Korea in 1995 there was no email available to the general public.  I communicated with my friends and family in Canada with handwritten letters.  The next year, a few Internet cafes started to appear in Seoul and I began to communicate with friends through email.  People stopped writing letters.

A few years later, the first instant messaging programs started to appear.  The first one I used was MSN Messenger.  When people started using messenger programs they stopped writing email.

These days I communicate with friends and family mostly through programs like Skype, Google Chat, and NateOn.  They are convenient but it is difficult to say much through them.  When I wanted to tell a friend about a trip in the past, I might have written a whole page on the places and people I met during my travels.  These days, because of the limited space in chat programs, I might simply answer, "I had a good trip.  The food was good."

It is foolish and unrealistic of me to expect people to return to handwritten letters sent through the post, but I do miss reading letters and email sent by friends.  Chat programs are nice but I would rather read about my friends' feelings and not just their 'status'.

-----------

That said, I would like to tell you that NateOn does not work so well on my iMac computer.  Therefore, if you would like to chat or send a message, please sign up for a Skype account.  There is a Korean version of the program.  My ID is Marcus Peddle.

And a handwritten letter or email would be lovely. ^^

Old Pleasures Once Again

Posted by 집행부 이야기 : 2010/06/03 21:55
When I was a young lad I played a fantasy roleplaying game called Dungeons and Dragons.  These days, most people think of Role Playing Games (RPG) as something you play on computer with thousands of other people.  But the RPG I played is different.  It takes place in your imagination and the players act the role of their fighter, elf, magic-user, and so on.  The consequences of your actions were often decided by dice and it was a very exciting game.

The Books and Dice Used in Dungeons and Dragons.

In 1995 I came to Korea and could no longer play Dungeons and Dragons.  Nobody around me knew the game.  Then, a few years ago, I was surfing the Internet and found a website where people played Dungeons and Dragons online.  I was very excited.  I could once again play the game I enjoyed as a younger person.  These days I play with three other people through Skype.  Two are from the United States and one is from Canada.  We have a computer program where we can draw maps but otherwise the game is still in our imagination.  Playing the game at the kitchen table with friends is the best but playing online is not bad.  Every Saturday morning we meet online and we play for several hours.  It's probably my favourite time of the week.

How I play Dungeons and Dragons these days. Meeting in person is best but this is okay.

Festival

I took quite a few photographs at the festival but most are probably not of interest to the English department.  So I will just post a few for your entertainment.

I Didn't Expect This (but should have)

Posted by 영문과 이야기 : 2010/05/01 14:42
Yesterday my wife and I ordered barbecue chicken from a restaurant that sells fried chicken, 'fire chicken' (불닭), and barbecue chicken.  Barbecue chicken is normally cooked on a grill over a fire so it's a little smoky and crispy.  That's what I was expecting.  But what I received was very different.

When the delivery man left, I opened the package to find pieces of chicken, rice cake (떡), and vegetables.  We knew there would be vegetables and rice cake but it was all cooked together in a red sauce.  Not grilled.  It looked like everything was boiled in the red sauce.  I was disappointed but I thought, "Maybe the sauce is barbecue sauce."  But no.  The sauce tasted good but it was made from hot peppers, not tomatoes, and it was very spicy, like 불닭.  Both my wife and I gave up eating after a short time.  It was too spicy for both of us.  My wife said, "If barbecue chicken is this spicy, I can't imagine how spicy 불닭 is."  I ate some bread to get the burning out of my mouth and my wife drank fruit juice.

Today I washed the chicken in water to remove the spicy sauce.  Then I fried it in a pan with some potatoes and Western barbecue sauce.  It was a little spicy but okay.  I won't order from that restaurant again.  What I received was very different from the photo in the advertisement and it was much too spicy.  But, some of the blame is on me.  Did I think that a 불닭 speciality restaurant would have something that is not spicy?  I should have expected that but didn't.

"Famous Last Words"

Posted by 영문과 음악 : 2010/04/22 22:58

My Chemical Romance is an American band from New Jersey.  Their album The Black Parade is one of my favourite albums these days.  It's a concept album, which means that all the songs have a similar theme.  In this case, the album is about dying and losing love.  Most of the album is quite dark and angry but the last song, "Famous Last Words", is quite hopeful.  Especially the chorus:

I am not afraid to keep on living.
I am not afraid to walk this world alone.
Honey, if you stay I'll be forgiven.
Nothing you can say can stop me going home.

Sometimes I listen to this song when I need uplifting.  The singer describes his troubles (life, love) and weakness but he finds strength in himself and from the woman lying next to him.  And, I think, he will be strong even if she doesn't love him.  I hope you enjoy it.  I will include all the lyrics for you to see.  (The lyrics have a few problems but never mind).

Famous Last Words

Now I know
that I can't make you stay.
But where's your heart?
But where's your heart?
But where's your...

And I know
there's nothing I can say
to change that part.
To change that part.
To change...

So many
bright lights that cast a shadow.
But can I speak?
Well is it hard understanding
I'm incomplete?
A life that's so demanding,
I get so weak.
A love that's so demanding,
I can't speak.

I am not afraid to keep on living.
I am not afraid to walk this world alone.
Honey, if you stay, I'll be forgiven.
Nothing you can say can stop me going home.

Can you see
my eyes are shining bright.
'Cause I'm out here
on the other side
of a jet black hotel mirror.
And I'm so weak.
Is it hard understanding
I'm incomplete?
A love that's so demanding
I get weak.

I am not afraid to keep on living.
I am not afraid to walk this world alone.
Honey if you stay, I'll be forgiven.
Nothing you can say can stop me going home.

I am not afraid to keep on living
I am not afraid to walk this world alone
Honey if you stay, I'll be forgiven
Nothing you can say can stop me going home

These bright lights have always blinded me.
These bright lights are always blinded me.
I say

I see you lying next to me
with words I thought I'd never speak
awake and unafraid,
asleep or dead.

Namsan, Part 2

I also took a few photos at Namsan at the weekend.  Enjoy.

Spring, Spring, Spring!

Posted by 영문과 이야기 : 2010/04/08 19:49
It was a very lovely day today.  This morning I rode my bicycle to school and took some photographs by the river.  On the way home I took some more photographs.  Even if the photographs are bad, stopping to look at something in the spring light made me happy.
Leaves are starting to wake and stretch from their winter sleep and forsythia flowers are lining the pavements like a parade for the sun.  I may not see the full bloom of smiles on faces until after exams but students looked happy today.  Let's enjoy the spring both inside and outside the classroom.  Picnic, anybody? ^^
